Geneva ,20-5-25 .
The Siti Vinayagar Temple, Taiping held its Kumbabishagam on 4th May 2025, This temple which was consecrated in 1924 is one of the oldest in the country .
The early Jaffna migrants who settled in Taiping were deeply rooted in their religious traditions, carrying with them not just their belongings but also a profound spiritual heritage. As devout Hindus, they sought to preserve the sacred rituals and temple practices (Agamas) that were central to their worship in Jaffna. For them, establishing a temple was more than just a place for prayer—it was a cornerstone for preserving their identity, fostering community bonds, and ensuring the continuity of their cultural legacy.
Taiping: The First Jaffna Tamil Hub in Malaya.
In many ways, Taiping served as one of the first major hubs for Jaffna Tamils in Malaya, from where they later migrated to other parts of the country. This movement was closely tied to British colonial development, particularly the construction of railways to transport tin and rubber to ports. The first railway in Malaya, built in 1885 from Taiping to Port Weld (Kuala Sepetang), marked a turning point in the region’s modernization.
Jaffna Tamils played a crucial role in this transformation, with many employed as clerks, technicians, and administrators in the railway and public sectors. Their contributions went beyond labor—they brought education, discipline, and a strong work ethic, helping shape early Malaya’s infrastructure.
Two famous Jaffna-built temples in Taiping are the Siti Vinayagar Temple and the Krishna Temple. Alongside these temples, two of the oldest and still-active Jaffna-based institutions—the Ceylonese Association of Taiping and the Young Men’s Hindu Association—stand as important pillars of the Jaffna Tamil legacy in Malaysia.
All three institutions have thrived thanks to the dedication of their active and committed committee members, who have worked tirelessly to bring them to their present stature.
The key figure overseeing the present Kumbhabhishekam (consecration ceremony) today is the current president, Dr. Elliathamby Karalipillai, the grandson of the founder, Mr. N. Eliathamby
The Founding of Siti Vinayagar Temple (1924)
In 1924, the Young Men’s Hindu Association (YMHA), which had been active in Taiping since 1918, took a pivotal step in realizing this vision by establishing the Siti Vinayagar Temple. The temple was the result of the collective efforts of dedicated community leaders, including:
· Dr. A. Viswalingam – famous eye Surgeon and a respected figure in the Tamil diaspora in Malaysia .
· N. Eliathamby – A prominent Taiping businessman and philanthropist.
· Murugesapilly Muthusamy Kurukal – A priest who ensured the temple adhered to traditional Agamic rites.
Understanding the importance of financial sustainability, N. Eliathamby generously donated a coconut plantation in Lumut and the rental income from two houses in Taiping to support the temple’s upkeep. This foresight ensured that the temple would thrive for generations to come. The same happened in Klang when Eliathamby Saravanamuthu donated the rental from his house towards the Subramania Swamy Temple . One of its founder members Dr Viswalingam founded the Aathi Eswaran Temple and the Saiva Siddhanatha Sangam in Kuala Lumpur.
