The Klang Subramania Swami Temple: A Legacy of Faith and Culture  , 

Since its inception, the Klang Subramania Swami Temple has followed the traditional Jaffna Temple practices from Ceylon (Sri Lanka). As a result, the Kantha Shasti fast and Sooran Pora became two of the most significant events in the temple’s religious calendar.

The Kantha Shasti fast, observed during the auspicious month of Aipassi (typically late October or early November), requires devotees to undertake a six-day fast in honor of Lord Murugan. Leading up to this event, temple elders recite the Kantha Puranam, a sacred Tamil text believed to be one of the most revered works in Tamil literature.

I recall elders such as Sivapragasam, Ehambram, Arumuganaar, and Kailasa Pillay taking turns to recite this voluminous poetic scripture just before the fast begins... Their readings were often accompanied by insightful explanations from learned scholars like Ayathurai Kurukkal, Saiva Kandiah, and Arumuganaar. 

Saiva Kandiah played a pivotal role in the temple’s spiritual life—not only as a religious scholar but also as a devotional leader who led the Thevaram hymns between abhishekam and pooja rituals. 

He served as the temple’s president for many years, during which renowned saints such as Kirubantha Varier and Mani Iyer visited our temple and Navalar mandabam and made interesting presentations . The Guru poojas for the  great saints—Manika Vasagar, Sundramoothy Nayanar, Thirugana Sambanthar, Appar and  Navalar—were grandly celebrated and well-attended.

Preserving Tamil Language and Culture

During the peak of Klang’s Jaffna Tamil community, from 1930’s to 1960’s ,the temple placed great emphasis on nurturing the younger generation through religious and Tamil education. Under the guidance of Somasundra Vathiar and with the leadership of B.A.B.L. Ramanathan Chettiar, Jaffna children  in Klang were taught Thirukkural and Saiva Siddhanta philosophy. These were truly memorable days at our temple.

The temple committee’s unwavering commitment to education as a core value ensured the sustainability of Tamil  language .. Parents prioritized sending their children  for Tamil education in the afternoon  while the temple community provided financial and social support

The efforts of the Jaffna Tamil community in Klang stand as a tribute to their enduring dedication to safeguarding their religion,  language, culture, and traditions for future generations.

The History and Transformation of the Jaffna Community in Klang,1900-1950.

Sivananthiram Alagandram ,Geneva, 14-1-23.  They arrived as a minority towards the end of the 19th Century in Klang, Malaysia from Jaffna with an agrarian background and by 1950,  the community had transformed itself into an affluent middle-class society and as a community to be reckoned with.  The Royal Town of Klang was the former capital of Selangor prior to the emergence of Kuala Lumpur as the state and national capital.  The growth of Klang as an administrative centre and the rise of  Port Swettenham (Port Klang )as a major port in the country at the dawn of the 20th century provided employment for migrants from South and East Asia.
